Twenty minutes at a time:
If you’re like many of us, you may have started out the year with the intention of getting your house more organized and keeping it cleaner. If that grand goal has already fallen by the wayside, we have an idea that will help.
How can you actually make it happen? The answer is deceptively simple: break the big goal down into a short everyday activity. Here it is: clean or organize for just 20 minutes at a time. Even 20 minutes a day, if done every day will result in remarkable progress in your living space.
If you give all your attention and energy to one thing at a time, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. There are some different ways to structure this. You can decide ahead of time which days you’ll do what: Mondays the kitchen, Tuesdays the bathroom, etc. Or you can assess your home each day and do whatever seems most pressing. Or set a timer for 20 minutes and see how many things you can get done before it goes off. How you decide to structure it is not important. Setting the intention to clean and then following through is what really matters.
Consistency is the real goal here. If you do something every day, you’ll be able to keep up with the cleaning instead of always having to catch up. This gives it a chance to become a habit, and then you’ll hardly have to think about it at all.
The key to this strategy is to keep your cleaning/organizing sessions to just 20 minutes at a time. If you really want to do more on a given day, do another 20 minute burst.
